Year of Progress
The inaugural cohort of teams from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Connected Communities (CC) initiative has made much progress this year. Two successful summits were held in New York and Utah that featured valuable peer exchange across the project teams, as well as panel discussions with industry stakeholders. We are excited to begin sharing success stories and cross cutting case studies as these projects move into their implementation phases.

Projects Making Strides
Our inaugural cohort of ten demonstration projects is making great progress: new projects are breaking ground, several projects are in the midst of implementing energy efficiency retrofits, and earlier this year two projects received approval for new utility tariffs. In addition, new research related to the projects’ varied control approaches is providing valuable findings to stakeholders via two industry conferences this year.

A New Era for Smart Buildings and Grid Solutions
It is my pleasure to share news about the newly-launched U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Connected Communities initiative. Our first cohort of nine competitively-awarded projects will advance the state of the art for grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) and demonstrate effective ways to move forward on demand flexibility and incorporation of distributed energy resources (DERs), to provide grid services while decarbonizing our buildings and electric grid.
